I recently appeared on the Cohesion podcast to talk about artificial intelligence and communications with host Amanda Berry and comms pro Carolyn Clark ($). Because there’s so much nuance, so much we don’t know and understand, and so many possibilities and landmines to dodge, I was happy to dedicate a little more than an hour to the topic. (We could have easily gone on for hours.)
The Cohesion podcast features thoughtful comms pros and practitioners from related fields giving actionable advice for our industry. Amanda Berry comes to each conversation fully prepared and it shows. Dig into the archive if you’re new to it.
Carolyn Clark, a VP at Simpplr, is one of the few in our industry who is seriously engaged in the A.I.+comms topic. Follow her to the cutting edge of the conversation.
The tension in this episode and the conversation at large is between the imperative of using A.I. to improve your comms game and the fact that it’s all too new and too soon to know exactly where best to apply the technology.
Timestamps for the episode:
06:47 - The role of A.I. in internal comms, including tips on how to use ChatGPT
19:09 - About Mister Editorial and mixternal comms; Carolyn’s career and interests
26:40 - How A.I. has (or hasn’t) already improved comms and HR, including examples
39:49 - The dangers and fears of A.I., and also what A.I. can’t do
1:02:23 - A.I. security and ethics
We talked about so much and yet—ironically—there’s not much to discuss. In my travels across the comms universe I’m discovering that very few comms pros are experimenting with A.I. and even fewer are using the tools regularly to enhance their day-to-day work. And that’s OK! (For now.)
A.I. technology is overwhelming, especially if you’re too busy doing reactive comms in your day job.
Who has time to figure out all this new-fangled technology when “urgent” comms requests that aren’t actually urgent are dropped into our inboxes each morning?
And let’s face it. Comms pros aren’t exactly early adopters of emerging technology, for various reasons.
This time is different, though. Unless you’re retiring soon, ignoring A.I. could hinder your career growth and ambitions.
Let’s Learn A.I.+Comms Together
I’m working on a series that explains prompt engineering, a basic but essential method of using artificial intelligence to manage low-level tasks or to help you overcome a blank page. The series will introduce you to helpful, easy-to-use A.I. tools, provide some best practices, and give concrete, real-life examples of how to apply A.I. in everyday comms activities.
Prompt engineering is a gateway to the potential of A.I. in your comms work. Learning this alone will put you leagues ahead of your peers. But this is just the start.
As a reminder—and for the 300+ comms-rades who subscribed to Mister Editorial in the past 10 days (welcome!)—I recently announced Intellicomms, a groundbreaking new series that explores the intersection of A.I. and mixternal communications.
Intellicomms will offer practical examples of how to use A.I. to enhance productivity, efficiency, innovation, and creativity in your comms role.
I’m also building a database of A.I. tools to help comms pros in everything from audio to content generation to operations to video and much more. My list has 138 resources and it grows every week.
I’ll draw on this database for the Intellicomms series.
The Intellicomms series is limited to Mister Edtiorial’s paid members.
If I’m being honest, I think this series has the potential to be a game-changer for individuals and our profession.
If that pans out, I might raise the price of a paid membership. So upgrade now to receive insights and best practices that can level up your comms game and lock in the current rate.
